Several questions here, I have looked through the forums and with v11 or later the licensing "magic" was supposed to be simple and more transparent but I still can't understand everything about it ... so here goes:
1) the HOME package: I looked and can't find this, understand that one can buy a non-commercial license, a whole complete subscription for $50 per year. I am doing more and more residential clients and this would be a great option to offer.
2) Device Count: I was able to find that Untangle counts the number of unique IP addresses to connect through the device during a 24 hour period (midnight to midnight). So anything in the network, even if it's not a user's device, such as a WiFi access point, printer, etc. which pings the internet, would show up and be counted?
3) License Bands: Glad to see the lowest band has been increased from 10 to 25, and that the bands have been broken out more, such as 25, 50, 75, 100, etc. instead of what I believe was 10, 50, 100, etc. Also, seems like the bands are across all apps, I assume one day we would be able to upgrade multiple apps online without having to call in?
4) License exceeded: So what does "Session not entitled" actually mean? Say one is licensed for 50 devices, and 60 or 70 devices are active today, temporary wireless guests, or something. All I can find is that the connection to the internet isn't scanned or processed by the paid apps but they are still able to get on to the internet. So what happens for instance, with WAN Balancer or Failover, does the device connect over the external WAN? All devices? Only those above the licensed number of devices? Other apps the same?
5) Bypass devices: Some master untangles mentioned that one should bypass devices to help manage actual user devices, so that they would not be included in the device count, etc. I assume that this is referring to the Config, Network, Bypass Rules tab? And one would add rule for the internal IP address or range, for instance for wireless guests, access points, printers, etc.
6) Public WiFi: Given the above items, there's no point in running WiFi guests through Untangle and trying to protect ones exposure to DMCA notices, etc. as that would cause your Device Count to continuously spike. The only solution I can see if to purchased an unlimited package for $13,000 per year, which none of my clients would be interested in doing? Seems like a problem to me, maybe I am wrong?
