Slow performance on Untangle

I've got Untangle running at my home, on a Atom D2550 w/ 2g of Ram, as suggested in numerous posts before. (Link to hardware here)

However, I've noticed over the weekend while doing some bandwidth intensive tasks that it's adding a pretty heavy overhead to the network. I have a dedicated 100/100 connection at home, and the most I'm able to push though it is about 75/75. I removed Untangle and tested with just a standard machine directly into the modem, and I"m pulling the full 100/100.

I'm currently running only Firewall, ad blocker, and reports. Just 2 users behind it, so nothing special there. Am I being hardware limited? Something I should test out? That box has 2 Dual Broadcom 57788 nics in it, is it a crappy interface issue?

Installing NG on Dell Dimension 2400

I pulled out a lot of hair over this one, so I'm posting it for the benefit of anyone else who, like me, really doesn't have any hair to spare. Trying to boot even the Untangle installation CD on a Dell Dimension 2400 results in an "undefined video mode number 317" error, and nothing you choose at that point will result in a usable boot. Here's how I worked around the problem. This should work for anything up to at least v11.

First, be sure the onboard graphics card is set to 8MB memory in BIOS. Won't work at all otherwise.

At the install CD's grub prompt, select the text installer and edit that entry. Find "vga=791" and change it to "vga=normal". Then boot and run through the installation.

On reboot, again at the grub prompt, edit the default boot line and make the same change. The system should boot and give you 1024x768 resolution, which is good enough to get the essential configuration done. As a side note, the ethernet interfaces might not look like they're working, but they are. You'll probably have to use the DHCP configuration screen to figure out which one is external/internal.

Post-install, on the console, open Terminal and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst . Replace "vga=791" with "vga=normal" where it appears in the boot config lines toward the end of the file. Now the box can reboot on its own without horking the video.

You're welcome. :)

Only SPAM Filter in bridge mode?

I have a customer who is having massive SPAM problems. They already have a Cisco router so Untangle would need to be set up in bridge mode. Since only the SPAM module would be used, could a VMWare VM be used for Untangle? There are ~100 users active at any given time.

9.4.2 Export of User E-Mail Safelist

Ok, 10.x was nice, and manually rolled a couple sites when having issues.

Now I am staring at one of the next ones that is getting the upgrade, straight to 11 now, but the catch is, there are about 2k email addresses in the user whitelists.... I had users with 5-30 on the last migration, not so bad to cut and paste, there are 1000+ in one user in this case, yes the filter numbers are set rather low, but about right.

Is there a way to extract the list, I'm not seeing one in the interface, and having just come back from a 2 week family vacation to a list of things that are broke, I'm ready for my vacation/nap.

Untangle 11 HP Proliant

I was using 9.x version of untangle on HP Proliant DL320 G2 until recently. Moved to 11. The fans make very loud noise.

On previous version I had hpsmh and hpasm packages which fixed this problem. It won't install on the new version. Tried to get the hp-health package from their repository and this is what I get:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
hp-health : Depends: dmidecode but it is not installable
Depends: libc6-i686 but it is not installable or
lib32gcc1 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Any advice for me? Thank you.

P.S: HP repository http://downloads.linux.hp.com/SDR/do...pool/non-free/

P.S: Still lot of SPAM getting through :(

Establishing a seamless network with Untangle

Hi all,
I'm very new to Linux firewalls. Just managed to learn off lately that Linux firewalls are safest and resilient enough to handle intrusions, attacks, etc.
I'm planning to install NGFIREWALL FREE version on the following configuration;
1. Intel Core i3 or later
2. 2GB RAM or more
3. 300GB HDD
4. 2NICs
Now, I'm planning to introduce NGFIREWALL in between the 10Mbps internet line and office LAN using the above configuration. I would like to know the following;
1. Will the system NGFIREWALL interface and communicate directly with the D-Link switch/router immediately after it before connecting to the users?
2. Will the system on which I have installed NGFIREWALL handle the load of 50-70 users on the office LAN?
3. Does NGFIREWALL FREE perform strict filtering and block user defined URLs?
4. Is it possible to define policies/rules for different departments in office? If so, then how? Also, which part of the Firewall will allow me to assign how much percentage of bandwidth is assigned to different departments in office?

Thank you for all the help in advance.

Failing to install Untangle after selecting install mode

Hello,

Please forgive me if this is a simple resolution, however i have not been able to resolve on my end and it has been extremely stressful.

Scenario: We had Untangle installed on a HP DC7800 with a Pentium E2200 Processor on a 64-bit version of Untangle and fairly new HDD (1 year old). We had a power outage which killed the HDD wouldnt boot. Purchased a new HDD and now when i try to install untanlge either 32 bit or 64 bit fails after selecting the install mode. Occurs whether i try to boot from CD or from USB. See screen shots.

I am not currently infront of the PC, and i do not have the entire error message
one of the error messages i receive is
Invalid compressed format (err=1)
kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-b

2nd error message:

There are 2 error messages 1 occurs when i try to install 32 bit and the other when i try to install 64 bit

I am wondering if anyone can help me figure out why untangle is not installing, on a machine that it was once running on just fine? How can i interpret the error messages?

Any help is greatly appreciated thank you.

Need help finishing up installation, newb

I am new to servers and thought that the installation would be just transfering over files but we are going from 9.4.2 to 11.0.1. I made screen shots of every setting possible and printed them out for reference but I need to configure this server while I have the old server still working. So I need both connected to the network without interfering with eachother. I am not very familiar with this and I have read a bunch of forums but nothing specifically like my situation. If anyone could tell me how to finish up my installation that would be great, or point me to a forum that I have not found yet.

Thank you ahead of time.

Email Client unable to connect to server

$

Hi, I'm new to using Untangle and so far I have setup the Untangle server and an hMailServer on a separate windows box. Have created two Port Forward rules for SMTP and POP3 on the untangle server pointing to the fixed ip address of the email server. On email server I can resolve DNS and receive emails plus the diagnostic checks with the hMailServer are all ok. The dns record for my mail server resolves to the external ip address of the untangle server but I am unable to connect any email clients to the email server. When testing the accounts it tells me the mail server is not responding.

Any help would be most appreciated.

DNS not functioning after 10 to 11 upgrade

$

Greetings Untanglers

After a long troublefree run with untangle, I've hit a snag and hope the brains trust here can assist.

My V10 was upgraded to V11:

Build: 11.0.1~svn20150105r39394release11.0-1wheezy
Kernel: 3.2.0-4-untangle-686-pae

However then there was no internet access from the clients. A quick check showed internet access from within Untangle and DNS was resolving on the router using the tools. Nada at the client. Manually adding the DNS settings to the client adapter settings restores service, demonstrating a hole on the inside of the network between the client and untangle DNS server.

  • I have removed the DNS override I had applied to the inside adapter for troubleshooting.
  • Checked to ensure there was nothing else obviously broken anywhere.

Sadly, nothing was found that might explain the dilemma. Can anyone advise what might be the issue that could have broken a working V10 install subsequent to the update.

Many thanks in advance.

Keith

Connection reset error

I've encountered a very strange issue... 2 separate networks running only the Free apps and V11.0.1.

The issue is anytime I go to download Sketchup, regardless of version. I get a Connect reset error in Firefox (tired IE and Chrome). I have access to another network running a v9 with only free apps and the downloads work...

There are no noticeable errors in the rack... tried with everything expect Firewall off.

Can anyone on v11.0.1 confirm or deny this?

Thanks.

Yet another Client cant reach the net thread.....

Hi Guys

I am stuffed.... read and read.... and no luck!

I had earlier PPPoE issues, which I believe are now sorted as I can get to the Untangle appstore and the web from the Untangle box, but I am damned if I can get any browser out to the web from a client.

Setup is:

ISP Modem -> PPPoE -> Untangle box -> Internal lan

This is setup as router, not bridged.

I have the local lan client default gateway set to the untangle inside IP.

I can reach the Untangle admin interface from inside lan.

I am using Google public DNS (at least for the tests).

I CAN tracert to 8.8.8.8 from a client, and it traverses the Untangle box and reaches Google as it should.

I CANNOT get any browser to reach the web at all from a local lan client (No proxy set in browser settings as I understand I dont need it).

I CAN ping 8.8.8.8 from a local lan client - as expected.

I CANNOT ping an external FQDN from a local client which has 8.8.8.8 set as its ONLY DNS.

In terms of Untangle, I dont have any apps or modules installed other than the setup wizard config (rack is empty).

As a test, earlier, I added a NAT rule, type protocol, "is", and in value, ticked each box (so all protocols, being desperate!) and the NAT type left as AUTO.

If I remove this NAT rule, I CANNOT ping 8.8.8.8 from a local lan client, so as expected (well, *I* expected!) that to get anything out, I would need a rule to pass it through to the net.

So - I'm stuck!

Other questions I have are around the firewall and Web Filters - how do these overlay the basic Untangle setup I hope to have working underneath?
Think thats probably a question for another day however!

Thanks in advance....

David

I have a friend who owns a clinic and has asked me to help him get his network/computer situation straightened out. He has a small clinic less than 20 users. He has no perimeter defenses other than a NAT/Router or standardized endpoint protection. His PC's are infected with a ton of malware as a result. I told him I thought Untangle would be an affordable solution at the perimeter. My questions are 1. should I go with an appliance or build my own like I did at my hospital? 2. If I build my own where can I find a hardware compatibility list for servers? The wiki list appears to have been removed?

Thanks again
Ken
