pfSense and UT on same VMWare ESX 5 Host

I went from using UT to pfSense over a 2 year period and have determined I like both. I want the state-full firewall of pfs and I want the nicely packaged UTM features of UT so my solution after months of thinking is this:

I have been running a pfs vm on a VMWare ESX 5 host for over a year now and it runs perfect. So I want to deploy a UT vm in bridge mode mostly for the Virus filter function. And I want to deploy on the same ESX host.

The host is a dell poweredge 2950 with dual procs and 8 GB of ram available for the UT vm. Three 10K hard drives in raid 5. I previously had UT 8 running on this physical server.

Is it possible as I would have to cable from one vSwitch to another on the same physical server?

Is this a recipe for problems?

Multiple Users In Untangle

I was updating a lite version of Untangle to the Full Version and it seems that another Admin was in the box as I was upgrading it. Some how or another the box got corrupt and stuck. It was working at first but I guess as we were trouble shooting and the other admin rebooted the box (through web interface) it got corrupt.

We were both at different sites when this happened. We are not sure how this happened other then both of us turning apps on and off at the same time. Is it possible to limit the users in the box, there are no settings for this under admin

Issue with Static IP Address

Hello,

I have used untangle in the past for testing etc. Now, after a period of no use, I am testing again.

After going through the install, I began the setup wizard. This is where I ran into my issue.

I have a Static IP so First try was as follows (also preferred setup);

CABLE MODEM===>UT===>Wireless AP/Switch

With this set up, Every time I set my internet address as static and test or save the settings, it will revert to dynamic and give me an address that is not my assigned IP. And I do not get an IP address from UT and therefore no network access.

In frustration since my AP is a router with DHCP disabled I decided to try in bridged mode as follows.

MODEM===>Router===>UT

In this setup, I get no access to the internet and cannot access UT

I have searched for a resolution and I must be missing it. Can someone point me in the right direction.

Upgrade to 9.3.1 went awry...

It was upgrade time for a client at 4am this morning, I proceeded to upgrade each UT from 9.2.1 to 9.3.1. Everything went fine except for, on the most important box (the VPN server), it all went wrong.

The VPN fell down as normal during the update, but never came back. Internet access and DNS resolution at that UT functioned normally. Apache wouldn't let me in on any interface, so after letting it think about the update for four hours and VPN still wasn't up, I rebooted.

After reboot, apache worked, but the config password is refused; the password became the untangle default terminal password you can ask for in the forums. The rack is visually empty, and the first time wizard came up. What is awesome about it it is, the apps are indeed there as the VPN server+web filter functions at the moment. The config+apps is there, the rack visually is not. Tentative plan is to throw in a 9.2.1 CD, reload, install the apps, restore the 9.2.1 backup, then attempt upgrading again. Is that best practice? All other UTs happily upgraded to 9.3.1 from 9.2.1.

Strange Dell PowerEdge 2950

Hello

I am tryng to do an untangle in a Dell PowerEdge 2950 and the installation do good but when i do a reboot the untangle dont found the root.

Then the os reboot.

I check my raid status and the array is in good shape, my five disk status is ok and online.

And i update the firmware of the Perc i5!

What happens?

web filter stops working

Hi,

I've just installed untangle and only use the webfilter lite module. I block everything and only allow a few specific site via the "pass lists". It works ok sometimes but quite often fails. By fail I mean that I can access a site I am not supposed to access.
If I go to a banned site it should block immediately with the untangle page and it

often does. Occasionally the browser hangs and then I get a page not found. If I refresh, it then succeeds I can see any banned pages. I can then view any web pages until after about 20 minutes the filter kicks back in and starts working again.

The is the same for all * PC's on the network. I can recreate this on both my untangles (one runs on real harware, the other runs in VMWARE ESXi).

Does anyone know what the problem is or where I can start looking for issues? I had a look around some log files on the host but not really sure where to start.

Is Untangle Right?

I've had untangle installed for a couple weeks now and have accumulated a lot of interesting data. I installed untangle to answer some basic questions, and although I have tons of data collected, I still don't feel like I can answer the questions I first set out to answer such as:

How much time are our employees spending browsing the web?
Which sites are they spending the most time?
Which employees are the worst offenders?

I currently have Web Filter Lite, Application Control Lite and Reporting installed and activated. Is there some other application I need to install to be able to answer these questions? Maybe it's in reporting and I just don't know how to find the information I'm looking for?

Or, is untangle not going to be able to answer those seemingly basic questions and maybe I need to look elsewhere?

2nd nic card not being deteced.

Hi all,

I've searched through the forum & found a thread in regards to my issue.

the 2nd nic card is not being detected. I've tried 2 different cards and still no go.

The main Nic is working.

The 2nd Nic is a Linksys LNE100TX

any advice?

I received a lot of this message from my kern.log but i do not really understand what it is refering to.

Using Untangle with a Modem/Router Device

I have Verizon DSL and my DSL modem is an all-in-one modem/wireless router. Can I still use Untangle? If so, how does it need to be hooked up?

After upgrading to 9.3.1.

I am having problem showing all session. It keep loading with out no end.

Any one have this problem and how to fix this. I can not look at the session that are running.

Untangle stops traffic at 1:15 AM

For the last 3 nights at exactly 1:15 AM untangle stopped all traffic both in and out. On the first 2 nights it resumed proper functioning at around 3:15 AM without any intervention on my part. Last night it did not resume functioning and only returned after I rebooted it.

I do not see why in the world 1:15 AM is a time when the machine would stop transferring traffic, and I am wondering what I can do to correct this behavior.

Hi everyone,

I am planning to switch from Zentyal 3 to untangle.

Why? Zentyal 3 UI slowness is driving me mad :P

a. Can Untangle configure DNS? I need an internal DNS (without need to configure BIND manually). Or do I have to use a different solution for this? DNS cache, transfarent DNS, DNS forwarder?

b. In Zentyal, I can configure ETH0 as external and PPPOE to dial to my modem to ADSL. And ETH1 as internal LAN. Can this be done on Untangle?

c. 1 more question. If I install the 14 days trial version of Premium Package, am I entitled to all the features of Premium Package?

Any help from the community? Thanks.

9.3 OVF deployment

Hi everybody,

I cannot install Untangle with this ova file on my ESXi server, when I deploy it in ESXi, he tells me «Error line 74 missing child element [connection]» ??

This is with 9.3 32 bits version that I haved take on this site http://sourceforge.net/projects/unta...Shovelhead%29/.

Some idea ?

Do servers count as PCs?

Just a couple of quick requests for clarification about licencing.

Do servers count as PCs?

Is the answer dependent upon which setup you go for - i.e. transparent pass though or gateway?

Example: 9 desktops, but two servers. Is that covered by the 10 PC licence? (It is a big jump up after that).

Also, what about other network devices (printers, scanners, etc) which may occasionally connect home to manufacturer check for / install firmware updates?

Bridged Mode DD-WRT

I was wondering if anybody out there has DD-WRT on their router. Basically I have a Linksys Router that I was using where I could turn off DHCP and set the router to "Bridged Mode" to allow Untangle to be my router. However, recently, I have put DD-WRT on my Router so that I can get more control out if it; the problem is I have no idea what setting to change that would be similar to Linksys' Bridged Mode. Any ideas?

Untangle via VMware

Hi guys,

Basically I used to have a modem set as bridge mode connected to a router which was doing the PPPOE authentication and then the router was connected to the External interface (which had a static IP address) of the Untangled box and then the Internal interface was set as bridge from External which was then going into the switch. This box is a host (ESXi) running untangled as a VM. This setup was working fine but I found any device that was connected to the router doing the PPPOE was not inheriting the untangled settings so this is why I have to change the setup so the router has to act like a AP now thats connected to the switch.

I found a router/modem which can be the device that does the PPPOE authentication. I turned off DHCP and gave it an internal IP (gateway).

In theory, this setup should be the same as the one I had before.

This is my current setup:

Router/Modem -> Switch

I want my setup to be this:

Router/Modem -> Untangled -> Switch (so that anything connected to the bridge inherits untangled settings).

Now I just plugged this router/modem into the External interface of the host and Internal interface of the host to the switch and the connection drops. Theres no light flashing on the external interface behind the host. What am I doing wrong here? I didnt change anything from the previous setup except now theres 1 router/modem instead of a modem as a bridge and a router doing the PPPOE authentication.

How to restore from USB disk OR CD/DVD-ROM

Hi all,

I've just re-install my Untangle, and I have my .backup file at USB flash disk and CD/DVD, how can I perform restore the file? I'm not able to see any path which I can search my file.

Please assist.
